Pepto Bismol is an oral suspension containing bismuth subsalicylate. It is an over-the-counter medication used to relieve occasional diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, indigestion, and upset stomach.

Key Information & Usage

How It Works: Bismuth subsalicylate works by neutralizing stomach acid, reducing inflammation, and slowing the growth of bacteria that can cause diarrhea

Dosage (Adults and Teens): The typical dose is usually 15ml (or 2 tablespoons) taken every as needed. Do not exceed 8 doses in a 24-hour period.
Safety & Warnings: Do not give this medication to children or teenagers recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms, as it contains salicylates which carry a risk of Reye’s syndrome.
Common Side Effect: It can temporarily and harmlessly turn your tongue and stool a dark black color.
